10 Essential Tips to Make Your Move Manageable!

You bought a new house or found a new apartment. How exciting, but don’t underestimate the amount of work and extreme stress you are about to face. I had the great pleasure of moving 9 times in 10 years, or was it 10 times in 9 years? I’m married to a builder and to survive this inevitable industry hazard, I’ve learned to adhere to these 10 essential moving tricks.

1. Start the minute you know you’re moving. It takes more time to organize, clean and pack than you think. So don’t waste a precious second – start now! Take the number of rooms divided by the number of weeks until the big day. That’s how many cameras you have to pack each week.

2. Know the terms and conditions of your lease or Sale Agreement. Make sure you meet all transfer requirements. If you are renting, understand what you need to do to get your security deposit refunded. Most leases require a tenant vacate by 5:00 pm on the last day of the lease. When selling a home, unless other arrangements have been made beforehand, the owner is expected to hand over the keys at the time of settlement, so plan to be out of your property at that time. Also, many rentals and some sales contracts require a professional carpet and/or professional house cleaning to be performed when you leave the premises. Since the new person is likely to move in the day after moving, there is little room for error. So plan any necessary cleaning now.

3. Get organized and stay organized: Classify that pile you intended to reach, organize and put everything, clothes, shoes, toys (make sure you have all the pieces), and you also need to find the corresponding covers for everything that Tupperware. . If you have too much to fit in that toy box or cupboard or casserole you’ve designed, or if any of the pieces are missing, guess what? Got it, go to step 4.

4. Give it away, throw it away, sell it all that you do not need, or can not be comfortable in the new place. Also, if something is broken and you haven’t fixed it now, you probably aren’t. If this move is temporary, then maybe, maybe a storage locker is in order. But most often a storage locker is a damp and forgotten place where things rot and die, so when in doubt, remove it now. Plus, the money you make by selling things you can’t use will help reduce your moving costs.

5. Have the Right Supplies on Hand. Start with about 10-12 boxes in various sizes and get more boxes as needed. Boxes, wrapping paper and tape are available either through your mover or from your local moving and warehouse store. You’ll need a few small boxes for heavier items like books, but you’ll mostly want medium and large boxes. When packing the kitchen, you also need 1 or 2 barrels of dishes. They are more robust and designed to protect glass and fragile items. And when it’s time to pack blankets and hanging items, you need closet boxes.

Other things you need to have on hand for packing include gallons and freezer-strength plastic sandwich, zipper-lock storage bags. I use it for everything from silverware to loose underwear or liquids like makeup and office supplies. You will need tons of extra strength trash bags, markers, packing tape, scissors or a tape dispenser and lots and lots of newspaper or wrapping paper. If you have a lot of fragile items, bubble wrap is also great. Keep these supplies in a place that is clean and dry and easy to access, but not under your feet. And designate and remove a place where the packed boxes will go.

If you’re not using a professional mover, you’ll also need a dolly, furniture pads (old blankets are great), and something to throw on the floor, especially if the weather isn’t cooperating or you have hardwood you want. protect

6. Online help: whether or not you chose to use a professional mover, you still need help. And if there is no engine, you need every man and woman able to find it. Plan now, before they put something on their calendar.

a. Arrange babysitters

b. Designate a person to move into the new home, long before the movers. Ask to take his cleaning products, including a vacuum cleaner and garbage bags, just in case he is not in a condition to move.

c. Who will bring you lunch? By the time the troops arrive at the new home, they will need a break and something to eat.

d. Designate another person to stay behind the old house. Ask to make sure all rooms (including porches, decks, outbuildings, attics, and other less obvious places like the inside of the dryer) have been completely emptied. Ask them to bring their cleaning supplies and a few trash bags, and do the final vacuuming, remove any remaining trash, and make sure the place is left in a swept condition.

e. Lineup that very important person who will disconnect and reconnect all that electronic equipment and have them bring their tools. Also, try to schedule the cable guy to arrive late in the day, after the televisions are in place.

f. Need someone to hang window treatments? Who will that be? He must also bring his tools and a ladder. Have you pre-measured the windows and bought what you need?

g. Additionally, ask at least 2 more people to come equipped with an assortment of tools, a few extension cords, batteries for the smoke detectors, and make sure someone carries another ladder.

7. Change your address: A change of postal address will forward all regular mail. But this can take up to 10 additional days and the shipment is only good for six months. So things that come once a year, like your 1099, and other items that prohibit submission, like vehicle registration and driver’s license renewal forms, will be returned to the sender. So, in addition to that generic Change of Mailing Address that will catch up on everything you missed, do your best to get all change of address requests submitted at least ten days before you move. And don’t forget to notify your employer, your children’s school, your doctor or any items by mail that come automatically, such as prescriptions, of your new address.

8. Utilities Schedule: You need to turn on the utilities in your new place, and you need to finish those in your existing house. If you have not ordered final invoices, and the new occupier has not installed the service, you may be held responsible for their charges. Also, avoid having utility service turned off, both at the address you’re moving from and the one you’re moving to. It can be expensive, damaging, and difficult to reverse.

9. Plan and Pack for your NEW Home. Take pictures or draw the layout of the kitchen cabinets. Decide what will go in each cabinet, mark the place of plates, glasses, etc. on your photo or drawing, and pack your items according to where they will go in the new home, not where they are stored in your existing home.

Next get the room dimensions, including locations for windows, doors, and closets, and make a simple sketch of each room in your new home using inexpensive graph paper. In this way, you can easily determine where the furniture will be placed in advance. On moving day, give the sketches to the person going to the new house in front of the moving team. Ask to tape each sketch to a door or window or another place easy to see in each room. In this way, one person can put away the items in your kitchen, while another can direct the heavy weights as to where to place that over-sized armoire that you could not live without.

And make a list of any important items you need to buy for the new home, such as draperies, blinds and shower curtains. Having these things with you on moving day will prevent unnecessary surprises.

10. Place a set of bedding for each bed in a marked box FIRST BOX TO OPEN. Keep sheets clean by packing them separately in a plastic bag clearly marked: Terry’s room, etc. To this box also add a bath and face towel for each member of the family, at least two rolls of toilet paper for each bathroom and others. bathroom essentials such as shampoo, soaps, etc.

On the morning of the move, have each family member strip their bed and place dirty sheets and any dirty clothes or towels in an empty laundry basket next to this box. Then each person must put all of their toiletries—packaged separately and clearly labeled in a ziplock plastic bag—into it. FIRST BOX TO OPEN. Each person should then place their pillow next to this box.

If possible this box, the laundry basket full of dirty items, and all the pillows should travel with you, in the back seat or trunk of your car. You might think it sounds ridiculous, but I promise, this simple step will be essential, later, when you’re tired after a hard day of moving and all you want to do is brush your teeth, find your pillow, and crawl. a freshly made bed.

Good luck and good move!
