All You Need to Know About Laundry Detergents
Have you ever thought you knew all there is to know about the many types of laundry detergents that grace our supermarket shelves today? Or do you hunt and peck like a chicken when it comes to finding just the right one to use? Here are some facts about laundry soaps and detergents that may come in handy.
The use of soap for the lake has been in existence for centuries. The main raw materials are oils/fats which are tallow or coconut and alkali which is either sodium hydroxide or potassium. Despite the improvements that have been made over the years in the quality of the soap product and in the manufacturing process, all soaps have one major flaw. They combine with minerals that seem to make the water as hard as bricks so that it forms a soapy curd. This can leave a sticky white or yellow residue on the washing machine and can also stick to fabrics in the washing machine. Yes! Can you imagine your clothes coming out of the washing machine full of sticky, yellow stains? This led to a limited popularity of soaps. There are only a few brands available. Today, however, there are two main types of laundry soap:
Powders for light jobs
It is essentially pure soap with fragrance and fluorescent bleaching agents. These soaps are designed for delicate and lightly soiled fabrics. Because these soaps are very mild, they are usually used to wash diapers and baby clothes.
Bars of soap
Have you been around long enough to hear about laundry soap? I don’t think so! They were the forerunners of the powder and chip forms. These bars are usually made of tallow or a combination of coconut oil and tallow. Borax and other builders are added to help add water and improve performance.
A good thing about a bar of laundry soap – it is excellent for pre-treating heavy stains and soils before washing. Other uses for the laundry soap bar are stockings and lingerie for hand washing.
DETERGENTS
Through the march of time, detergents have replaced soap for washing mainly due to the fact that they perform on a wide spectrum of water hardness levels. There are as many different types of laundry detergent as there are colors of roses today! They are categorized by their general purpose and are available in powder or liquid form.
General purpose
Powders
o They are made for all washable fabrics all the way from dirty work clothes to lightly soiled laundry.
o Some powders can be used for house cleaning and washing dishes.
Liquids
o These are used for general laundry, but they are very good on oily grounds.
o Because the laundry detergent is in liquid form, it is very easy to pre-treat grease spots and stains before washing. They are very convenient and efficient to use.
Combination of laundry detergents
Laundry detergents were developed that had an alternative to bleach that was in the form of color bleach as well as fabric softeners. This no longer requires the purchase of two products. Now one product could do two or three jobs rolled into one! You can now wash your clothes at lower temperatures and still have them smell fresh and look like new.
This is just a little about the laundry detergent dilemma that you often find yourself in when buying the right detergent!
