Anorexia nervosa is a well-known eating disorder that affects 2% to 3% of women in most developed countries. That is why it is expected that many nurses in medical uniforms will be handling these women in various hospital departments.

It actually started the moment the patient collected comments from other people saying she was fat. Then in response to this, she became so addicted to such a strict diet that she refused to eat for fear of getting fatter. She always checks her waist for possible extra inches. Because of this, her brain developed a disease called anorexia nervosa. She would eventually discuss possible remedies with psychiatrists, men in medical uniforms who would perform regular physicals to bring her back to her previous eating patterns.

The problem that the Time article points out is not the antecedents of the disease itself, but the underlying factors of the disease. As implied, women with anorexia (and some doctors in medical uniforms) believe that their cessation of menstruation is one of the consequences of the disorder. This myth has been debunked, and even if a woman doesn’t menstruate, it doesn’t necessarily mean she isn’t ovulating. Therefore, simply noticing irregular or absent periods does not affect a woman’s fertility.

By the numbers, the study presents a pretty solid piece of evidence that anorexia is directly linked to unwanted pregnancies and miscarriages. The Norwegian Mother-Child Cohort Study studied 62,060 women to participate in their program. Of the 62 women who claimed to be anorexic, half reported unwanted pregnancies, while 19 percent reported healthy eating habits. Among those with anorexia, 24 percent said they had had an abortion, compared with 15 percent of those without anorexia.

While in previous years anorexia was merely a mental disorder, often a confusion or conspiracy of Hollywood stars, today it can be considered one of the most critical controversies as it is now passing through the moral and ethical sieve.
