Beaches of San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan is a very large metropolitan area. For tourism purposes, the only relevant parts of San Juan discussed in this article are the adjoining communities of Old San Juan, Puerto de Tierra, Condado, Ocean Park, and Carolina City on Cape Verde Island.

beach rules

alcohol

Visitors are often surprised by how alcohol-friendly San Juan is. Alcohol (especially beer) is sold on almost every beach. Beachgoers often come to the beach with beer, wine and cocktails. Drinking alcohol on public beaches is not only legal, but also licensed by the city government.

exposed

There is no nudity in Puerto Rico. There are no “private” or secluded areas in San Juan to engage in such acts.

music

There are no rules about music volume or the use of electronic devices on the beach. The only limits are those self-imposed by taste and courtesy.

Community

old san juan

Old San Juan sits on a cliff to the north and the port to the south. The only public beach is at the foot of San Cristobal. This beach is rocky, uncomfortable, and not easily accessible. Furthermore, it adjoins two favelas (La Perla and Puerto de Tierra). Non-residents unfamiliar with Puerto Rican culture should probably avoid this beach.

tila port

Adjacent to the Caribe Hilton is a lagoon and beachfront popular with locals. This beach (Escambron) is very popular with locals due to the area’s bathroom facilities, ample parking and easy access to the motorway. Tourists rarely venture to this beach, which is usually rowdy and typical Puerto Rican. It is not dangerous during the day, but caution should be exercised at night due to its remote location and proximity to the poor neighborhood of Puerto de Tierra.

Condado

Condado has several notable beaches. First up is Playita, an enclosed lagoon on the edge of the Condado Bridge. The lagoon stretches into the bay that separates Miramar from Condado and is known for its kayaking, paddle boarding and calm lake-like qualities. Playita is perfect for little ones and is absolutely safe day or night.

The beach next to La Concha is known for the boardwalk that partially surrounds the oceanfront. There are chairs available, and on Sundays, the adjoining Ventana del Mar festival jazzes up the area. NOTE: Tides between La Concha and the outcrop behind Presby Hospital have claimed life in the past. The area is ideal for wading and swimming on the shore, but caution should be exercised due to frequent rip currents. The beach is also known for its surfers and boogie boarders due to higher than normal waves.

The gay beach in front of the Oceano and Atlantic Beach Hotel is just behind La Concha. This part of the San Juan waterfront has been a gay favorite for decades. Torrents can sometimes cause problems here too.

The last stretch of beach behind the Marriott is rocky. There is a surf area behind the Marriott, but surfers have to navigate the rocks to enjoy the waves. Condado Beach is very safe during the day and generally very safe at night.

Ocean Park

Ocean Park’s beaches are some of the best in San Juan. The beachfront begins at an outcrop behind the Presby Hospital, and after a 100ft hidden rock barrier, flows smoothly to a tranquil and quintessentially tropical beachfront. The mile-long waterfront has volleyball nets, palm trees, mobile vendors (ice cream, beer, ‘alcapurrias’) and gentle surf. The area east of Presby Hospital is another surfers favorite. Ocean Park’s beaches are completely safe during the day, but caution should be exercised at night due to the absence of lights and pedestrians.

Ultimo Trolley

Nestled between Isla Verde and Ocean Park is another local favorite. Ultimo Trolley, named for its location on the last stop of the now-defunct streetcar in San Juan, has ample parking and street vendors. Adjacent pavilions and sports courts host salsa bands, performers, athletes and other locals who spend the day at the beach. The area should be avoided at night.

Verde Island

Isla Verde is technically located in Carolina City. The crescent-shaped waterfront is lined with luxury resorts and hotels. The area is known for its calm surf and safety. The mile-long beachfront ends at El Ambique, a local favorite, with several bars and restaurants near the beach area. Isla Verde offers banana boat rentals, massage chairs and a host of other amenities for the luxury seeker.

in conclusion

San Juan is special because it is one of the few cosmopolitan cities in the world with a tropical beachfront. San Juan has three miles of pristine tropical beaches that are entirely public. The wide variety of beaches offers opportunities for everyone from kids to thrill seekers.
