Blue Screen of Death – The Horror and The Dilemma

Ah how we love our computers. Our precious little darlings. Our be all and end all of our universe. Where would be right now without our computers. Playing in horrendous meadows, chasing those awful butterflies and taking in all the lovely fresh air.

But then you get the Blue Screen of Death (please imagine that in a deep scary voice reminiscent of Zeus roaring from Olympus). You know that life is over at that very moment. You know that your computer is possessed, has evil inside and is no longer your friend but is now your enemy.

It will allow you the odd moment of peace and normality. You think that by running a quick virus scan has worked. That you computer is not back to itself and then BAM! Blues Screen of Death! Right in the middle of the most important piece of work or midway through your highest frag count in some first person shooter.

You cry. You put your head in your hands and you cry. Inside you die.

Oh okay, that is a little bit dramatic, I’m allowed some artistic flare. But the fact of the matter is that it is really, really frustrating.

Most of the time the Blue Screen of Death has appeared, it is due to memory problems. Faulty memory. Old useless memory. Bad motherboards. Corrupt files systems and virus ridden operating systems.

So what do I do. Well first I don’t give up. And I certainly don’t reach for the operating disks to reinstall. I’m assuming you have all backed up your precious files right? I wrote a piece on that very subject. Assuming you have, then I would always attempt to run in safe mode (F8 at startup) and run you virus and registry cleaner software.

I would run MSConfig under the Start Menu, assuming you’re using a Windows machine. Enter that into the run box and tell it to disable all system startups. Reboot and see what happens.

I would also try removing memory to see if this is the root cause. Run memory scanning software (this take hours so be warned). The checking of memory is assuming your competent enough to do so, if not stay clear and ask someone who is.

If all this fails then I would run a repair of the operating system. Not I said ‘repair’ and not a fresh install. Why? Because there is a high probability you have not backed up your system in eons. So always try running a repair first. There are far too many ways to do this and too many systems that do this differently so I’m afraid you should look in your manual or have search for you operating systems help guide.

After repairing you should run the virus scan and registry scan. This alongside the disk scan (chkdsk).

If the above fails then as a last resort try a fresh install. Wiping your computer clean may be the answer but only do so if you know what you’re doing and the risks involved with losing information.

The nightmare root cause would be that the motherboard has failed. If this is the case the seek help from your local computer repair store, but be warned, you may need your credit card!

In the end computers are like humans, they can sometimes cough and splutter if something isn’t right. Don’t give up on your old machine and give it one last chance to be your friend again. Or you could always go outside and enjoy that fresh air now!
