Ceiling Fans – Safely Installed

There are many styles of ceiling fans to choose from out there. We have one in our dining room. We do not have Air Conditioning and we have about ten days a year that it is very nice to have the ceiling fan for air circulation.

I was talking with one of my clients whose new house we were cutting right now and the topic came up about the ceiling fan/light combo that goes in the family room. He told me about his neighbor across the street who had installed a ceiling fan just to replace a light fixture on the ceiling. After a week, while running, they saw the fan fall from the ceiling. No one was hurt, luckily.

I assured him that the fan going into the new house was solidly anchored on a truss beam in the ceiling. When I’m done, you can hang on to that fan and it won’t move in the least from its anchor point.

If you want to install a ceiling fan in your home then, I suggest that you make sure that it is securely anchored to a beam or ceiling beam. Most ceiling lighting today is hung on plastic boxes that are nailed to a beam with two nails. These are defined in the National Electrical Code (NEC) 314.27(A) as capable of suspending appliances weighing less than 6 lbs.

For ceiling fans there are two specifications, these are in NEC 314.27 (D), specialty boxes marked for up to 35 lb of fans, and those that can support 70 lb of fans. These boxes usually straddle a beam or beam, or have a very serious anchoring mechanism that spreads between two beams/beams and suspends the fan between the beams.

The basic ceiling fan mounting dimensions range from the most common of about 4″ in diameter to 8″. You have now reached a decision point. If you have a fan with a small base, mounting it on the beam without changing the box will mean that the box will be exposed and possibly even the wire. With the 8″ base you can anchor it on the beam and also cover the box.

I might consider using a 3/0 pancake box (metal) or a special fan box that straddles the joist. Find the edge of the beam (next to the existing box), the beam is usually a 2x thing so it’s 1 ½ inches wide, so the center is ¾” from the edge. Then I put the 3/0 pancake on the roof. and draw an outline of the new box on the sheetrock. If you have a hole saw which size you can use, otherwise use a razor knife to cut the rock from the beam. use it as a filler in place of the old box.

Then, remove the old box. This can be done with a hacksaw blade to cut the nails holding the old box to the beam. BEWARE, you don’t want to go deep and cut or damage the wire to the box that is stapled close. When the box is released, remove the wire from it. Pull the wire through the roof, insert it into the pancake box and anchor the box to the beam. The mounting ears of the box must be in line with the beam. Use 10×2″ screws to anchor the box.

Now find a paint stick or something similar to go into the ceiling hole. Run parallel to the beam centered on the existing hole. Attach it to the plafond with two 6×1 ‘or 6×1 ¼” sheetrock screws. Next, fit the cutout piece of rock to the hole. Once it is sized correctly, make some caulking to go around the edge of the piece and on the stick, press it into place and use another rock screw to anchor it to the stick. Wah Lah, hole gone, use caulking as needed.

I mounted the base of the fan to the pancake box using 8×32 screws And I used a 10×2″ screw at each end of the mount, securely anchoring it to the joist. The fan will now be secured to the ceiling. Install fan.

If it turns out that your light is on a span mount between the beams, then this involves a little more of a challenge. Start by removing the screws that hold the box to its span bar. The box comes out smooth. If there is attic access above it, go up there and remove the span bar and replace it with a 2×4 that fits between the joists, put a pancake or fan saddle box in the 2×4, pull in the wire and install the fans

When you don’t have access to the attic, then the real fun begins. You need to go to the supply store and get a span mount for a ceiling fan. You can do all the work through the 3 ½” hole where the original light box was. Reaching in to remove the span bar nails or staples can take some time. Once that is done, insert the new heavy span bar and make sure it is perpendicular to the beams AND is at the right height for the new box to be flush with the ceiling. Turn the center section of the span bar to expand it solidly in the joists. Mount the box and then mount the fan .

We finally got to the point where we could turn on the fan/light. Enjoy!
