Children Wetting The Bed Is Common – Understand the Problem

The first thing to understand about bedwetting in children is that it’s a relatively common problem. In fact, while most children develop what’s called an “adult pattern” to control their urination habits by the age of three or four, so they’re dry both day and night, bedwetting—or nocturnal enuresis, as it’s described in medicine Up is the term – occurs in up to 20% of five-year-olds and up to 10% of 10-year-olds.

The condition is more common in boys than girls, with one study showing that by age 7, 15% to 22% of boys wet the bed, compared with 7% to 15% of girls. The good news is that in most cases, young children fall into the “infrequent bedwetting” category, so they wet the bed less than twice a week. In fact, only 2.4 percent of school-age bedwetters are believed to wet the bed every night.

However, children were also more likely to be classified as severe when their bedwetting problem persisted after their 10th birthday, meaning they wet the bed three or more times per week.

The question is, should you consider seeking help if your child wets the bed? According to experts, the answer is yes. That’s because, while it’s true that children will grow out of the problem, bedwetting can have a huge impact on a child, affecting everything from self-esteem to relationships with friends and parents, and possibly even their performance in school. Children with bedwetting problems are often teased by siblings and friends and may be reluctant to go on school trips or parties that require somewhere to sleep overnight.

In fact, even among children who experienced only one bed-wetting “incident” per month, the problem was linked to low self-esteem. Despite this, Australian statistics show that only 34% of families with bedwetting children seek professional help. Many families hold on until their children grow out of trouble. This is true for most kids, but for those who don’t, it can be very difficult.

Unfortunately, when you consider that not only is bedwetting treatment reported to improve self-esteem, no matter the type, or even how successful the treatment is, the correct bedwetting treatment is effective in over 90% of cases.

In contrast, most of the techniques families tried to solve the problem on their own — including reward tables or restricting fluid intake before bedtime — had no effect. Even more worrying, as many as a third of parents have at some stage used punishment as their first line of defense in coping with a problem. In fact, most kids classified as “bedwetting” aren’t doing it to be mischievous or rebellious. In fact, while bedwetting was once considered a psychological condition, it is now widely accepted that mood disorders, such as the behavioral problems sometimes associated with bedwetting (especially in older bedwetting children), are actually problems of effect rather than cause.
