Gardens by the Bay Set to Blossom
With Gardens by the Bay, the “Super Trees” and towering glass-domed conservatories significantly alter the city’s landscape. Complementing the Botanic Gardens, this new gem at the Marina Bay Center in Singapore’s new city center is the largest garden project in Singapore and will strengthen Singapore’s multifaceted global reputation as a garden city. As announced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the 2005 National Day Rally, the botanical sanctuary will also become Singapore’s premier urban outdoor recreation space and a national icon.
Gardens by the Bay is being developed in phases, with three unique waterfront gardens – Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central, covering a total of 101 hectares. Officially scheduled to open to the public in mid-2012, it offers people of all ages a place to enjoy the greenery and plants, and find a comforting respite from the hustle and bustle of city life.
The most striking features of the Golden and Silver Parks are the Supertrees, which are tree-like structures with a height between 25 and 50 meters (9 to 16 floors). Multifunctional, they use environmental technology that mimics the photosynthetic function of trees, storing renewable solar energy that can be used for other functions such as lighting. These towering gardens also collect rainwater for irrigation and fountain displays, just like real trees absorb rainwater to grow. They also act as ventilation ducts for the greenhouse cooling system. In addition, there are even skywalks between some Supertrees, where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the garden and surrounding gardens. A bistro will also operate on top of the 50-metre Supertree, offering visitors a unique treetop garden experience. At night, these incredible vertical solar trees become a magical sight as they transform into stunning, shimmering canopies with the help of special lights and projected media.
Other themed gardens include the Heritage Garden, which depicts Singapore’s colonial heritage and multiracial identity. Dragonfly Lake supports biodiversity and provides habitat for fish and birds. From 14 to 20 November 2011, a preview of the Flower Dome, one of the two striking cooling greenhouses organized together with the World Orchid Congress and Exhibition. The preview featured tropical horticulture and garden art, showcasing groves of baobabs, olive trees and palms in the Mediterranean and semi-arid tropics, with displays of exotic flowers and sprays, and myriad orchids.
