Home Schooling Three to Five Year Olds and Legal Requirements
Parents who have decided to homeschool their preschoolers have researched the value of homeschooling their own children. Starting homeschooling in the preschool years is a great way to get parents and children used to learning at home. It’s also a great way to easily learn how to teach and organize your homeschool schedule. The child is not used to school; therefore there is no adjustment period. Also, preschoolers are very easy to teach because they primarily learn through play.
When creating a tailored preschool program, parents provide a safe environment through interactive toys. Believe it or not, parents are a child’s first teachers. Children this age imitate everything their parents do by watching, playing, helping, talking and listening. Reading to kids this age is one of the best ways to develop avid readers. At this age, no standardized curriculum is required. Children learn by coloring, cutting, pasting, counting, singing, rhyming, playing games, playing with clay, playing on the playground, learning to be with others. It’s important to engage in some of these activities every day in a stress-free, relaxing way. Children this age need your love and attention, not academics and structure.
The key to learning at this age is to provide plenty of hands-on projects, especially arts and crafts. Many children in this age group have play dates where they meet other children, go to the park, the farm, or even go shopping. Preschoolers love being a part of everything you do, whether it’s emptying the dishwasher, or sorting the mail, and especially baking. Even though their short attention spans may seem incapable of intense learning, they are learning from real life experiences.
Homeschooling parents don’t have to have advanced degrees. A successful homeschool parent has several qualifications: love and understanding of their children, a desire to continually learn and grow, and a desire to spend time with their children. While it may seem awkward at first, especially if your child attended public or private school, teaching ends up being secondhand. Parents need to learn flexibility and organization at the same time. Open communication and a strong bond between parent and child are the keys to successful homeschooling.
Homeschooling is legal in every state in the United States. Each state has its own guidelines for homeschooling. There are also many support groups for homeschooling parents. Some private schools offer homeschool support and/or lessons. Several different programs also offer group activities after school, such as sports or science. Friends and family can also help with homeschooling. Sometimes there are cooperative homeschool groups where one parent teaches math and the other parent teaches history.
There are also support groups for homeschooling parents who feel burned out or depressed. There is guidance on teaching and teaching sessions that parents can attend. Continuing education helps parents feel confident in their teaching skills. But remember, every parent of a teacher at some point, when you’re a parent, it’s unavoidable.
Parents document the progress of their homeschooled children through tests, some annually and some alternative assessments. Recording your child’s daily activities and learning is essential to monitoring your child’s progress. When parents find it difficult to teach a subject, they turn to private tutors, online courses, tutorial CDs, or community college courses to supplement their studies.
