How to Change the Brushes in Makita’s BDF452 Cordless Drill
Just as every day will surely turn into night, every industrial driller will eventually need a carbon brush replacement. This, however, is certainly not something to fret over, a brush replacement is quite simple and replacing the brushes in a Makita BDF452 cordless drill only requires a few simple steps before your drill is back in fighting shape.
First, because all brushes are not universal, you’ll want to make sure you replace your old brushes with the correct brush set. The BDF452 requires the Makita brush set 194427-5. You also want to be sure before starting any kind of tinkering with the drill, that it is absolutely and in all possible ways turned “off”.
Next, you just need to locate and remove your brushes. At the back of your drill there will be a back cover. This is a dome-shaped piece of housing (or clamshell) that can be removed without removing the rest of the tool housing. Unscrewing the back cover will directly reveal the brushes. Keep in mind as you disassemble each part of the tool that everything has to be put back together. Be focused and organized to make sure you can put everything together properly.
Under the rear cover, the brushes will be inserted into their guide sleeves. To remove it, you need a small pick or a hook (a dental-like tool or something similar) to release the brush from the field lead (which in this model is actually a yoke unit but does the same thing) . Using that small pick or a hook, pull back the spring tensioner to disconnect the brush from the field/yoke and slide the brushes out of the drill.
Prepare the new brushes for insertion and pull back on the spring tensioner to install the new brushes. Be careful to insert them in the same orientation in which the old ones were removed and make sure they make full contact with the armature switch bars. Now, simply reverse the disassembly process and put the drill securely back together – this should only require you to recover the back cover.
Once all the parts are tight and in their proper places, test the functions of the drill to make sure everything is in perfect order. If all functions are working then you have successfully met that brush replacement and you are good to go. If, however, all things do not check so well, remove the back cover again to make sure that the brushes are in full contact with the armature and that they are oriented correctly. If you find no errors and the drill still does not meet your performance expectations, you should take the tool to an authorized Makita repair center for a professional inspection.
