How to Hang Wallpaper
Creating a feature wall with wallpaper is a great way to add color, texture, and personality to your home. Choose a wall that makes the most impact when you walk into the room. You can create a feature wall in an entry hallway, bedroom, living or dining area. So many options!
If you’re a handyman, you probably won’t have any problem hanging your own wallpaper. Here are some instructions to help you hang wallpaper and create a beautiful feature wall.
You will need:
- Glue – Prepare as directed
- Paste – Prepare as directed

- Large steel ruler or spirit level
- Roller brush
- Paint Brush

Step 1. Preparation
Your walls must be clean, smooth and dry. So sweep away those old cobwebs and remove the dust, grime and grime. We’ve found that washing the walls with sugar soap and a large orange or yellow sponge used to wash cars is a great way to clean them.
Polish off any irregularities. Putty any holes. Be sure to remove old wallpaper before applying new wallpaper.

Step 3. Measure and cut the wallpaper

Measure the height of the wall. Leave an extra 5 cm (2 in) for trimming. Roll out the wallpaper and make a note of where you have to cut it out. Carefully cut the paper using a utility knife or Stanley knife against a steel ruler or large level. Roll out more wallpapers and match patterns. Cut out the wallpaper and discard the parts that don’t match.
Continue measuring, matching, and cutting the wallpaper until you have all the pieces to complete the feature wall.
Mark spots vertically along the wall so when you hang the wallpaper you can check to make sure it’s in a straight line.
Step 4: Apply Adhesive
Use a paint roller to spread the paste evenly from top to bottom to the back of the wallpaper. After applying the paste, fold the wallpaper in half and fold it again until it is only about 30cm wide. Place it in a large plastic trash bag and let it sit for 30 minutes to allow the paste to absorb into the wallpaper. Continue with each wallpaper. Continue folding the wallpaper until it’s a size that fits easily in a plastic bag or trash bag. Remove the air from the plastic bag and seal it to prevent the wallpaper from drying out, as it will be a while before you are ready to hang the last strip.
After waiting the time it takes to stick, apply the glue to the wall near the edge of the wallpaper. Use the pencil marks you made earlier to guide you. Your border should be about 10 cm (3 to 4 inches) wide.
Step 5. Hang the wallpaper
Starting at the top, we usually work left to right. Don’t forget the extra 5cm (2″) of trim at the top! Use your hands and a soft sponge to smooth the wallpaper onto the wall. The wallpaper was then lightly sanded smooth with a plastic lathe to remove air bubbles and excess paste. Use the markers on the wall to make sure you hang the wallpaper in a straight line.
Use a soft cloth to remove excess glue from the edges.
Exactly matches the edge of the wallpaper. If you find a small gap between each strip of wallpaper, start at the center of the strip and gently massage the wallpaper in the direction of the gap. Use your hands or a special wallpaper roller. Do the same from the other side.
It is important to smooth out the surface of the wallpaper as it becomes wet from the paste to ensure all air bubbles are removed. Also continue to remove excess glue, and keep an eye out for any air bubbles that may appear as the paste dries.
After hanging each strap, cut off the excess trim at the top and bottom.
Once you’ve cleaned up, it’s time to step back and admire your handiwork!
