How to Play Indoor Mini Golf – The Beginners Guide

Indoor mini golf

Indoor mini golf or Putt putt, the name of the game is famously known by is a little brother of the world famous game, golf. Miniature golf uses a smaller version of a golf club known as a putter hence the name putt putt.

Invented between the late 19th century and early 20th century, the miniature golf ball grew greatly with the growth of mini golf courses; current training courses and playing fields, mini golf tournaments and professional players who have taken up the sport as a career. More recently, mini golf has evolved from being played on outdoor courses and has become an indoor sport graced with light in the dark lights that bring so much color to the game, especially when played at night.

Away from the history and growth of the sport, let’s play miniature golf. As in the Jack Nicklaus game, the main goal of miniature golf is to put the golf ball in a hole with as few strokes as possible. You need to select a putter that is approximately the height from your feet to the waist. At this length, you are halfway to becoming a putt-putt master.

How to hold a putter

Similar to normal golf, the second key to mini golf is the grip. This is just the way to hold the putter to make sure your shot directs the ball exactly where you want it to go. Remember that you need to put the ball in the hole with as few strokes as possible. The hand that goes first for a perfect grip is your dominant hand, that is, the hand that is the “go to” hand whenever you need to use it. Reach for the putter and do a shake – hand action on the putter handle. The second hand comes after the first, but puts it behind the handle. Other forms of grip are the forehand grip and the overlap grip. Both are not commonly used, but are important to know since different people may have a preference for one grip over the other based on body structure. The forehand is similar to the backhand, but has the hands further apart. It uses upper body strength leaving less effort on the hands compared to the backhand. Finally is the overlap. Here the dominant hand is held under the less dominant hand. This grip focuses a lot of grip power on keeping the putter in control and is the least popular among professional mini golf players.

Posture for the Swing

After you’ve mastered the grip, you’re almost ready to start playing. Place the ball in front of you and make sure that the ball and the tip of your feet make a triangle shape in relation to each other. This is known as posture. Your feet should be approximately 30 centimeters apart pointing in front. Posture is used to achieve a good swing without losing your balance and therefore having a bad swing. In the words of Jack Nicklaus “proper setup gives you a good chance of hitting a reasonable shot even if you make a mediocre swing.” The farther the feet are from each other increases the stability, but consequently increases the force required for that pendulum movement to have the ball rolling.

Then comes the goal. The putter has a line on the top. This line is known as the target line. It helps tell you the direction in which the ball will roll after your swing. Therefore, the aiming line should always point to the hole, so the ball will roll in that same direction. Make sure the putter lines up horizontally with the ground before taking a shot.

Take the Swing

Finally the swing. For a beginner, it would be tempting to have a Tiger Woods swing, but remember that the clear field acres in golf are not there, so such a swing can lead to damage considering that you are playing at home. Miniature golf uses a putting stroke, not much effort is required. The putter should be swung, but never above your waist. Sometimes, the smaller the shots, the less number of times you need to put the ball in the hole.

Test Run

After you have these skills practiced, you are ready for the course. Have the ball at the beginning of the green. Usually, it is delimited with a black mark where you are your ball. If it is a competition, everyone in the game must choose a ball of a different color to avoid confusion during the game. Everyone takes their first shot. The person whose ball is closest to the hole gets the next swing. If the ball has not entered the hole by the sixth swing, then it is the person with the next closest ball to take a swing.

While playing indoor miniature golf, you may find yourself in a position where the ball comes to rest near a wall. According to the rules, you are allowed to move the ball two club head lengths for a proper swing

Overall, miniature golf is a wonderful game to share with the family on a weekend. The rules are quite simple and the victory does not depend largely on physical strength, so young people and grandparents do not feel at a disadvantage to participate. Weather or weather is not even a factor when you play the game, considering that it is at home that adds to the fun. On the plus side, miniature golf can also be improvised with old cups for the holes and a small putter. Cushions and chairs can act as hazards to make the game more challenging. Keeping the point, the outdoor experience can be imitated with equal or even more fun.
