Knee Deep In The Holy Spirit

Today we will study Ezekiel’s vision described in 47:1-4. In this vision, he had a guide to lead him through it. This vision foretells the beginning of the church after Christ’s resurrection and explains the role of the Holy Spirit in the Christian life that will determine our spiritual growth and our relationship with our Heavenly Father. Every day I see new Christians anxious – can’t wait to grow and receive all of God’s blessings. – If that’s you, or you’ve lost what you once had, listen to what I have to say next.

The Holy Spirit lives within each believer the moment they are born again. When believers consciously surrender themselves to the filling and control of Christ and the Holy Spirit, the growth process is greatly accelerated. A believer with the power of the Holy Spirit is a faithful student of God’s word, learns to trust and obey God, and can pass through various stages of spiritual growth in a short period of time and become a mature Christian. — Some Spirit-filled Christians bear more fruit of the Spirit in one year than other uneducated or 50-year uncommitted believers.

Ezekiel 47:1. — “Then he took me again to the door of the house (temple-church); behold, the water flows from under the threshold of the house to the east: for the front edge of the house faces east, and the water flows from the right side of the house, south of the altar , come down from below.” — The water in question here is living water — or the Holy Spirit.

As we study and surrender to God’s Word, we become more filled with the Holy Spirit. This water comes from God and enters the world through the Church. Those living waters flowed from Him.

Ezekiel 47:3 – “The man went eastward with the rope in his hand, and measured a thousand cubits, and brought me across the water, which was as deep as my ankle.” — The water apparently came from a stream under the east gate The creek, flowing over 1000 cubits, is less than a third of a mile. Ezekiel goes on to record: “The man . . . carried me across the waters,” adding that the water was ankle-deep. (This symbolizes the area where new converts or little Christians walk)

Ezekiel 47:4 He measured out another thousand, and pulled me over the water. Water up to knees. He measured another thousand and sent me across; the water was up to my waist. (This symbolizes our spiritual growth and maturity as we go deeper with the Holy Spirit).

The water ran deeper and deeper. Among other things, it symbolizes our continued walk with the Lord, because as we walk through the living waters to experience more of the Holy Spirit, we come to realize that His supply of grace and love is abundant and unlimited.

Ankle-Deep Christians – This is the area where we build our foundation. That’s why my church runs a special 13-week program that teaches new converts the basics of the Christian life. (build a solid foundation).

At the moment of salvation, we receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. However, it is up to each individual to determine how much of the Holy Spirit we want to fill our lives.

Ezekiel 47:3 symbolizes the new Christian stepping ankle-deep into living water. But if you hope to grow up, you’ll have to keep going downstream, through ankle-deep waters. You’ll notice in section 4 that the water gets deeper as you go downstream.

Yet we see many Christians, old and new, walking through rather than going down the river. They come on Sunday mornings, step into the water from the shores of the world, and return to the shores of the world as they leave church. We have well-wishers who start our Solid Foundations course, but they don’t attend regularly. There are people who never attend Sunday school classes – only attend Sunday morning service – never pray or read the Bible – and then wonder why their lives are a mess or not getting all of God’s blessings. These guys aren’t even ankle deep—their toes are barely in the water. In order to grow, they have to go down the river — looking for it just below the surface.

We are “self-centered” and lack faith in God’s Word, allowing our small afflictions to grow into big problems,

We allow “simple disagreements” to escalate into major confrontations that break friendships and even families. – but if we have been walking in the Spirit and in right relationship with God – it will be just a “simple disagreement”.

Our faith grows by walking in the spirit and receiving the Word. But how many of us even open our Bibles for a few minutes each day to receive his glory?

We can have the Holy Spirit all we want. All we have to do is step into the water and continue down the river.

Each of us can use the stream. It is your decision or choice to step into it, and then have the wisdom and desire to go downstream. Sometimes this requires sacrifice.

Spiritual maturity always depends on our willingness to sacrifice our desires for the good of God’s kingdom or for others.

Knee-Deep Christian – Ezekiel 47:4 – “He measured another thousand and pulled me through the water up to my knees. He measured another thousand and pulled me up to my waist.” (This symbolizes our spiritual growth and maturity as we go deeper with the Holy Spirit).

This is what the Holy Spirit does in the lives of those who obey Him. We begin to experience the provision of His grace as a stream flowing from Christ—the source, and its preciousness continues to increase as we flow down each day in the light of His Word.

Ezekiel 47:7 “When I return, behold, on the banks of the river, there are many trees on this side and on the other side”.

When Ezekiel stepped out of the waist-deep water, he was amazed to see the banks of the river covered with strong, healthy trees bearing fruit. (This symbolizes the large number of mature Christians in the church teaching the Word of God and bearing new fruit.) This is where the church was sometime before the coming of Christ.

Galatians 5:22,23 “But when the Holy Spirit rules our lives, he produces in us these fruits: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” .

As we develop these fruits into mature Christians—broken marriages are repaired,—forgiveness becomes easy,—telling others about Jesus is a joy (an obsession),—we have acquired the patience to stand Be still, let God come into our lives,—God’s love is manifested in us through our good works,—Our self-control is strengthened, so we gain strength to resist temptation,—We desire to serve God’s glory And serving God—we have experienced the power of joy, peace, and contentment no matter our circumstances. (How much better will life be?)

But to accept these things, we must step into this river of “living water” that Ezekiel saw in his vision, and keep going until all these fruits are thriving in our lives. When the Holy Spirit controls our lives, we crave knowledge gained through God’s Word. When we sing to Him in church services, we raise our hands and sing praises. We long to become more like Jesus.

If you are a Christian and your life is out of control, under stress, battling temptation. Or you’re in an addiction you can’t quit. If you are not experiencing joy and peace, then maybe you have come out of the water and you need to get back in the water. Or it may be only ankle deep, (some of you may have been there all your life), and the fruit fails to bloom. Then ask God to give you the strength to move forward. We must keep going until we have received enough of the Spirit and the Word to bear those fruits. We can have the Holy Spirit all we want. All we have to do is keep going down the river.

Ezekiel 47:7 symbolizes a large number of mature Christians who are teaching the Bible and bearing new fruit. Thousands have begun bringing others to Christ through “bridge ministry.”
