Make Your Own Hemp Candle Wicks: It’s Easier to Do Than You Think
A lot of people (myself included) find that they have a lot of marijuana in their home. So, what can you do with it? One of the best, easiest, and easiest things you can do is make your own cannabis candle wicks. how do you do it
First, a quick explanation to make the wick the wick (as opposed to the string or anything else). It’s just a stick of flammable stuff coated with other flammable stuff. While this sounds weird, it actually makes it burn more slowly. However, you have to do a few things to properly wick your cannabis. Usually with cotton, you need to soak it with water, salt and acid. Since hemp is already much drier than cotton, you can do this step or skip it, it’s up to you.
If you decide to soak your cannabis in this solution, make sure to let it dry thoroughly before the next step. Once completely dry, melt some wax in a bain-marie and dip it in. You can use paraffin wax, soy wax, beeswax, or just use an old burnt out candle (a great way to save money and candles!) Ideally you want to heat the wax to 160 before you start dipping the wick to 170 degrees (Fahrenheit).
You want to dip the wick while keeping it perfectly straight if possible. The easiest way to do this is to tie a weight to the bottom of the thread (anything will do, like a quarter) and hang it from something while it dries so it stays straight. If you want to do more than one at a time, you can buy special racks (a bit pricey for me), or you can stick paper clips (the thick ones) to a dowel, which is a cheaper option.
After dipping it in the melted wax, hang it up straight and let it dry and cool completely. If you really want your own cannabis candle wicks to burn evenly, you can dip them again and let them dry completely. This will give them a thick, even coating that burns slowly and consistently and doesn’t require constant trimming. Once painted and allowed to dry, the wick is ready to be made into a candle. What’s the easiest and cheapest way you can do this without buying supplies?
Use something you have around the house as a mold, but we’ll do that in a minute. First, we need to obtain or craft a wick tag. The lamp chip is just a small piece of metal at the bottom of the candle that prevents the wick from burning all the way down, and if it’s a container candle it can cause the bottom of the container to overheat or burn wherever the candle is. Now, let’s be honest, the wicks are pretty cheap (about 10 cents each), and if you think you’re going to be making more than 3 candles, just buy a pack. If you’re as impulsive as I am and can’t wait to get some, you can make one with a thumbtack. how?
Just push a pushpin through the wick and place it in the bottom of the mold, and that’s it. So, now that we have a wick ready to go, it’s on the wick label for safety purposes, and we’re ready to find a mold to make our candle. Just about anything will do, you can use soup cans, coffee cans, or even just soda cans. Personally, I like soda cans because I can unmold the candles (soup cans have ridges so the candle stays in the can). Just very carefully cut off the top of the soda can, paying attention to the sharp edges, and place the “chip” in the bottom center of the mold. To keep the wick centered and straight, hang it from something until the candle cools.
Once everything is ready, just pour the 170 degree wax into the mold and let it cool for a few hours. It will sink a bit in the middle and you can leave it that way or top it off with slightly warmer wax (about 175 degrees). Once completely cool, snip the wick to a quarter inch, remove the candle, and you’re ready to go! Now that you know how to make your own cannabis candle wicks, you can make as many candles as you want!
