NetMeeting in Windows 7: Where Is It?

You just installed a fresh Windows 7 operating system on your computer. Windows 7 is truly a great operating system, and you’ll almost certainly enjoy its many features. Sooner or later you decide to share a PowerPoint presentation with your colleagues. you type “Meeting“Starts a good old version of NetMeeting in the Run menu. You hit enter expecting a new and improved interface, but… nothing happens. Wait, is my Windows installation corrupted or are they rebooting again Named the software?

Where is NetMeeting?

Let’s be clear from the start – there is no NetMeeting in Windows 7. Microsoft has removed it from the latest operating system. Why? They are pushing companies to deploy full-featured unified communications solutions such as Microsoft Lync. But what about those of us who aren’t ready or just don’t need such complex solutions? All is not lost and there are a few options available.

What are the options?

Let’s take a quick look at some of the tools that can be considered as NetMeeting alternatives for Windows 7.

Microsoft official solution

NetMeeting in XP Mode – Actually, you are running a Windows XP virtual machine inside a Windows 7 operating system.

advantage:

  • Free (in Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate).
  • You get the full functionality of NetMeeting.

shortcoming:

  • Available only with Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate.
  • Heavy – Running a separate OS just for one application seems like overkill to me.
  • Requires non-trivial installation and configuration – can be a problem for end users.

Microsoft Shared View – Cannot be considered as a direct replacement for NetMeeting as it does not allow you to connect directly to another machine’s IP. That is, it does not use a peer-to-peer (P2P) connection.

advantage:

  • Microsoft’s official Windows 7 replacement.
  • free.
  • Improved functionality.

shortcoming:

  • Works over the Internet and therefore requires an Internet connection.
  • Less secure – your data leaves your private network.
  • Slow on a local network because it’s no longer P2P.
  • A Windows Live ID needs to be created.
  • Limited to 15 participants.
  • Installation is required.

third party solutions

Tools like WebEx, LogMeInetc. are readily available from a number of suppliers. Feature-wise, they’re even further behind NetMeeting than Microsoft SharedView, and many users would say they’re “too much.” The only time I would recommend using such a tool as a replacement for NetMeeting is if your organization has already implemented and paid for it.

advantage:

  • Rich features.
  • Your organization may already have them deployed.

shortcoming:

  • expensive.
  • Most of them are web-based.
  • Often complex user interface – overloaded with functionality.
  • Requires Internet connection and ID creation.
  • Not P2P, and usually very slow.
