Of God, Mindfulness, Breathing and Meditation

In the television series Knowing God, Morgan Freeman sets out to explore what people think of God.

In order to know the answer, he traveled all over the world to understand God better and more deeply.

He talks to ordinary people, archaeologists, historians of religion, and clergymen of the world’s major religions (namely, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism) to find out what they think of God.

Christianity has God the Father, Islam has Allah, Elohim or Yahweh in Judaism, and Brahman in Hinduism.

Buddha, in Buddhism, is not a god, but a state of enlightenment. The goal of all Buddhists is to reach that level, to become a Buddha.

Mr. Freeman: How do you gain enlightenment?

Monk: True pure enlightenment is a very long and tedious process that can only be achieved through constant meditation.

mr freeman: How do you meditate?

the monk (smile): The easiest way to meditate is to focus on your breath.

Breath means “concentrated breathing”, which is the main component of breath breath mindfulnesswhich is one of two basic meditation techniques (the other being mettā) taught by Gautama Buddha.

What is Mindful Breathing?

This works if your theory focus on your breathingyou become aware of the tendency of the mind to jump from one thing to another.

By focusing on your breath, you can bring yourself back to the present moment and enjoy all the richness that is contained within.

Many years ago, I suffered from severe migraines.

Meditation with focused breathing stimulates the hippocampus and frontal lobes, which are responsible for long-term and short-term function of the brain.

In a recent study published in Neuroscience Letters, regular meditation was reported to slow the progression of cognitive impairment, which is Dementia.

2. Improve the digestive system:

If you have chronic digestive issues, meditation can provide almost immediate relief from your discomfort.

This is because regular meditation improves circulation and increases oxygen levels, which are then shared with other organs, such as the stomach and intestines.

Besides that, increasing oxygen through meditation also helps the immune system and heals the lungs.

3. Make you feel happy:

Meditation stimulates the prefrontal cortex, the “feel good” part of the brain.

This is especially beneficial for you if you have fallen into and out of depression due to life circumstances.

Your zest and energy for life will be enhanced.

4. It helps you focus more:

Through meditation, your left and right brain hemispheres work together to increase your focus, creativity and intelligence.

You’ll be mentally sharper and better able to integrate into society, allowing you to fully enjoy your retirement.

5. Here are the best ways to beat stress:

Life as an older person can be one of constant stress from chronic illness, loneliness, loss of a spouse or loved one, separation from children, limited fiancés, and more.

Being immersed in these things for a long time can lead to chronic stress, which is only one step away from depression, dementia and eventually Alzheimer’s.

Focused breathing can get these out of your mind. It costs nothing and can be done anytime, anywhere.

Acknowledging that it doesn’t fully solve your problems, but it gives you some respite and valuable time to figure out how to fix them.

There is no problem that cannot be solved. But sometimes we are overwhelmed with too much to think logically.

Meditation clears your mind. It removes the chaff from the grain.

6. Dispel loneliness:

As a senior living alone, my biggest concern is loneliness. Sometimes tears soak my lunch or dinner.

Both of my children are married and live alone. Even though we see each other every now and then and they are just a text message away, there is nothing quite like their presence to have a more personal conversation with my dearest.

But that has become impossible. They have their own lives, their own schedules, their own spouses.

I’m just a blip on their screen.

When loneliness becomes so suffocating, I settle into a comfortable place and take focused breaths.

I empty out all the negative thoughts that come from being alone, accept the reality of the present moment and focus on the present moment.

It works all the time.

Skeptics may view focused breathing as a first aid method; a Band-Aid solution to a problem that affects most older adults. It just masks these problems.

perhaps. But it’s the best option for fighting loneliness, stress, and many other age-related problems.

It’s cheap and can be done anytime. Even if the relief you get is temporary, it will give you some valuable time to think about more concrete solutions to the problem.

In the end, Mr. Freeman traveled through mountains and rivers and found that all religions have one thing in common: God is peace, God is love, and God exists in the hearts of each of us.
