Petabyte Age

Everything in computing needs storage – blogs, instant messaging, social networks and people’s documents, all reside on our computers or those of someone else, for example Gmail in the case of e-mail. As the amount of available data increases, the storage requirement and its measurement units also increase.

Storage units in computers start with bytes (or 8 bits). A little over a thousand bytes (ie 1024 bytes) comprises a Kilobyte (KB), a 1024 KB comprises a Megabyte (MB), and 1024 MB comprises a Gigabyte (GB) which is the most common storage unit today. This multiplication of 1024 goes on to define Terabyte and then Petabyte.

Petabyte is considered a milestone in the scientific approach – to a point that it is sometimes called the Petabyte Age. What sets this huge amount of data apart from the limited data available previously is the prediction that in the Petabye Age, scientific researchers will no longer need to create hypotheses, models and then test if their hypothesis and model is correct or not.

For example, instead of hypothesizing that a certain age group is more susceptible to health risks, or a certain geographical area is likely to be hit by a riot or political uncertainty for a certain reason and test this against some data, mining of advanced data could be used. Such mining of Petabytes of data would allow crunching a virtual unlimited influx of information, such as scanning news around the world, to identify problem areas with trends and problems of “high importance or severity” without the need to identify and its underlying causes. This type of “geo-tagging” has already started in the form of projects such as Google Zeitgeist and Europe Media Monitor – EMM. Therefore, in the Petabyte Age, centuries-old scientific methods of hypothesis, model, test are ready to be replaced by what enormous amounts of data tell us. In short, inferences out of huge data collected from all over the world do not need models of their explanation as the numbers speak for themselves. For example, rapid monitoring of epidemics, predictions of wars, voting patterns, etc. In his article entitled “The end of theory”, Chris Anderson, editor-in-chief of Wired writes – “Science can progress even without coherent models, unified theories, or indeed. any mechanistic explanation at all”. But only time will tell if the Petabyte Age with the ability to process zillions of data points and aggregating information through numerous sources and sensors using cloud processing would change science or not.
