Reusable Halloween Costumes

I have three boys and they all generally like the same costumes, so I’ve been able to reuse our costumes year after year. One year the youngest didn’t want ANY costume! He didn’t like to wear clothes over his clothes (a common thing in our Northern climates). Well, I was determined. It was nice to wear his red hat and sweatshirt, so with a feeling I had in hand, I made eyes and ears for his hat and went as Clifford, the Big Red Dog.

This experience made me think of other ways you can create costumes out of what you have OR to get basic sweat shirts and sweat pants (or regular shirts and pants depending on your weather and outfit) that can be easily reused later Halloween.

Cowboy and cowgirl looks are common and easy with jeans/shirt and hats. Oh, don’t forget the red bandana that can be found very cheap in craft stores.

Red Dress Ideas:

• Lady Bug – Simply getting self-adhesive felt (available at craft stores) you can cut round spots and make your little trick-or-treat in a lady bug. A little more creativity will allow you to make a red cape that can easily be held at the corners to make wings.

• Clifford the Big Red Dog-Like I did, just make the ears and eyes (I looked at a Clifford book to see how to make his eyes) and quickly sew (or hot glue if you’re that way tilted) on the red hat and you. I got Clifford the Big Red Dog!

• An apple – Use green fabric and some craft stuffing to create a stem (leg of an apple) and glue or sew on a hat OR use a ribbon sewn to the stem to make two links that can be used to attach the goat stem on the top of the head (remember to use two ties and ties with a bow that comes under the chin and can be quickly untied for safety). You will have an apple for Halloween.

Ideas for white clothes:

• Black, irregular felt spots and you have a cow OR smaller irregular spots and you have a Dalmatian puppy. You can add to the dress and make a LOOSE brown collar with the name of your puppy, OR add a Christmas bell for your cow.

Ideas for gray clothes:

• How about having a mouse or a cat slinking around on Halloween? Again, cut the ears for a hat from the felt. Black eye liner makes the buffalos easily drawn on the face and if you are REALLY creative, go for felt gloves for his hands (simple gloves, without fingers and add pad pads at the bottom for realism).

Making M&Ms

• Okay, you know the colors, red, black, brown, yellow, and now a few extra colors like blue. Cut an “M” out of white felt, you will need two. There are several ways to proceed from here. You can either use self-adhesive Velcro dots to attach the “M” as you would to an M&M colored sweatshirt OR cut the “M” out of the self-adhesive felt.

Flower creation:

• Purple, pink, yellow and other “flower” colored clothes are great to send your little ones as flowers OR to have them wear green so that they are the stem of the flower THEN cut the flower petals from your felt and add a coordinating hat. . If you want to add some rigidity to your petals, you can buy a sizing yard that can be ironed into your felt and provide the desired rigidity.

The bottom is attached items so that they can be easily removed later and you can reuse the sweatshirts, sweatpants and hats. It doesn’t take much to create cute and cheap Halloween costumes that will quickly transition from dress up to everyday wear (which is a big plus in this economy!)
