Running a Mobile Disco – Order of Events at a Function
First priority, make sure all sound checks are done at least ½ hour before anyone arrives. Starting with the opening remarks, good evening and welcome to (insert name) 30th birthday party at (name of location), (introduce yourself and your staff, if any), tonight we will be showing the past 5 years Music, and your request.
Usually some music from the mid to late 90’s or more recent (but not so loud that people can’t talk) Remember the first 1-2 hours of any show – people like to talk. Sugababes, All Saints, Texas, Blue, etc. for the first hour or so (but can get a reservation where they want good dancefloor filling music from the start). Announce the buffet in the usual way, like “Okay, the night you’ve been waiting for, the buffet is now officially open and located in (say where the room is, so you can go to the buffet now. Play some quiet music, like the love album , artists like Feargal Sharkey, Foreigner, Annie Lenox, Chicago, George Michael, Celine Dion, you get the idea.
Buffets usually I give them 25-45 minutes to eat.
At the end of the buffet, have the birthday person do the presentation there, don’t limit mic time, let them thank everyone they want, cut the cake, etc.
Then after the presentation, thank the speaker, have everyone sing happy birthday (and play the theme music for people to sing), after happy birthday, then three cheers, etc. Announce plans for the next 2 hours – the type of music you’re playing, etc., and invite guests back to the dance floor as the disco begins.
Started with the 80’s dance classics Tiffany, Culture Club etc – remember there were 30 there, they were teenagers in the 80’s, they went clubbing in the 80’s and they loved it when they were drunk. Get into some of the latest charts, dance and RnB, don’t do commercial dance/trance or beat mixes all the time, you might clear the room, also remember, don’t play more than 3-4 dance tracks at a time. Best to keep the swap for decades, you should see when you change the music, the danxe floor clear, then the old generation or the young generation get up, I call it stock rotation. It’s getting late into the night, the last hour or so.
At family events I played a lot of party tracks like Robbie Williams, Tom Jones, Steps, John Travolta, Shania Twain, Ricki Martin and many of the classic 70’s disco hits – Jacksons, The Groove Generation, Mud etc. Okay, it’s about 11:20 and we finish at 11:30, so it’s time to slow down and play a proverbial love song. In this show, I will play Mariah carey – Without You. She did it in the ’90s, Nelson did it in the ’70s. So most people will know.
Don’t forget to regularly invite guests over the microphone to make requests, and if you print out request sheets then these should be distributed to each table early in the evening.
last song.
Well it’s this person’s birthday – they’re the reason you and everyone are there! So get everyone in a circle with the birthday person in the middle (and their partner if they have one) and if you can put a white spotlight on the couple. Then play Tina Turner – Simply the Best. Make sure you use the mic to get everyone up and announce where you want the couple to wait, don’t make them second guess your plans. Once you’ve got the circle playing with Tina Turner, then leave it to them – they know what to do now. With 10 seconds or so to the end of the song, announcing that this is the last song of the night, can we have 3 cheers for the last time, and after 3 cheers, say, how is the evening everyone? If you had a good night, you should get a big cheer from them. And then say, thank you so much, you’re a great bunch, glad you enjoyed it, have a safe trip home, good night.
Power off the mixer and unplug some wires, make sure people see you unplug the wires. Then they know you mean business and you don’t have all the trouble of “playing one more” and all that.
But remember, at most private events, many guests may simply be there as a courtesy or by invitation! Not everyone likes dancing or disco. However, just because people might not spend as long on the dance floor as you, or be slow to leave their table, doesn’t mean they don’t like your music and appreciate your efforts. So, don’t be too disappointed if there are only a few people on the dance floor!
