People can sense and feel when someone AT talks to them as if they were children. People who talk AT will not do what is expected and will feel insulted and do the worst job (or seek a transfer)

This is very similar to our own emotional self (the subconscious mind) and it has incredible power and yet is outrageously emotional and not as rational or logical as our adult self (conscious mind)

* * Talking to others is the basic norm that most of us expect and regulate. It shows some mutual respect and is more efficient. Good bosses, managers, supervisors, etc. lead people and with mutual respect people will follow this lead. Good leaders take their people into account and consider feedback and opinions. Employees feel they have value, even if they don’t always agree.

The disadvantage is that we usually hear the other person speaking while we are thinking about what to say or how to respond, so we are not really fully present and miss many important aspects of communication. The other person feels this on some level and realizes that they are also guilty of this forgivable habit.

People who talk mostly to others (and to their own 12-year-old self or subconscious) understand the importance of respect and validation. They don’t bully themselves or you when they talk or communicate. Their subconscious won’t necessarily help much, but it won’t sabotage them like the group that talks AT others (and themselves)

At this level you feel much more connected and understood and a sense of well-being and belonging that is priceless.

You can remember someone in your past who had this positive effect on you, where you wanted to do what they asked you to do because it made logical sense and it also felt good for all the right reasons.

And by the way, stress drops and workplace efficiency sky rockets with more of this powerful level of communication. This takes mindfulness and practice which is totally worth the small effort for the bigger benefits.
