Tile Baseboards – How to Use a Cocking Gun With Adhesive to Apply Tile Baseboards

If you decide to use an adhesive such as PL premium to attach tile plinths to your wall, then you need an application tool to do so successfully. The correct tool needed is known as a caulking gun, simply because it looks like a gun with a barrel and a trigger mechanism, and which is used to apply a variety of adhesive substances known as “caulking”, like silicone for example.

There are a variety of styles and brands of caulking guns available on the market to choose from, but in my advice you should definitely stay away from the dollar store options. These are normally found to be made of metals and inferior quality material, and can buckle up in a short time due to the pressure required to squeeze the particular caulking products from their application tubes.

Spend a little more on a good quality caulking gun, anywhere in the range of about $10 to $12 dollars, as you will likely find that someday soon you will need to use it again, especially if he you are interested in DIY construction oriented projects. . You can still find good brands anywhere between the $7 to $20 mark, but don’t splurge on a professional caulking gun at the higher end of the price scale, as they are better suited for removing adhesives. and the required dense property sealants. for specialized jobs.

To first use a tube of adhesive or any silicone product, pull the trigger rod of the cocking gun to its maximum length by pressing the release button with your thumb located at the rear of the trigger mechanism . Insert the application tube into the barrel, making sure that the piston at the end of the push rod is located in the hollow hole at the base of the tube. Pump the trigger a few times so that the piston is firmly in the recess out of sight, but without using too much pressure, and just enough to take the tube firmly in place.

Next, cut the sealed end from the plastic cone-shaped applicator nozzle to allow the adhesive to flow. Because it is in the shape of a cone, the further away from the tip you cut it, the wider the hole will be for the flow content, so start small and work your way according to the product and your application. Use a Stanley knife for a clean cut, but always watch your fingers when cutting such items, especially while they are held in your hands during the process.

With a long nail or the poker tool attached to your caulking gun, if there is one present in the design, stick this in the plastic mouth to pierce the fine seal on the tube. This finally releases the product from the tube, allowing it to flow from the mouth of the plastic cone when pressure is applied. If it is the poker attached to your gun that you used to pierce this, then do not forget to clean it before starting with your work, since it is always important to look after your tools and remove any unwanted substances from them in way that will last longer.

Finally, pump the trigger again, and this time you should feel more pressure when you do so. You should see the adhesive flow into the plastic cone if the plastic is partially visible, but if nothing comes out after two or three pumps and the pressure becomes more rigid on the trigger, then stop what you are doing, release the pressure on the piston, and insert your poker or nail once.

If the contents flow freely when the trigger is pumped, then there are no problems and you are ready to start applying. To prevent the contents from flowing, however, simply release the pressure by pushing the lock button on the push rod with your thumb, and pulling out the piston of the caulking gun a little by hand if necessary .

If however the pressure builds but nothing flows, then it could be a matter of three things causing the problem. If the hole is not drilled correctly and the seal inhibits the flow, then the adhesive will not expel from the tube and the trigger becomes solid. This you can easily see by unscrewing the mouth of the plastic cone from the tube, if the thin metal film has been pierced.

If the hole is visible, then either your gun is not suitable to express the content and you need one that can apply more pressure, or the content of the tube is out of date and solidified beyond use. Caulking should have a sale-purchase or use-purchase date printed on the tube, and most likely you will find it on the piston insert. So, be careful when buying any caulking product, and make sure you don’t buy old stock from your hardware supplier. These things happen, and at the cost of your own expense.
