What’s For Christmas This Year?

I know a lot of people are facing this question this year during these difficult economic times. My son is 10 years old and my baby is 1 year old. She’ll be happy to have an empty box and wrapping paper. My son, on the other hand, has come to understand and love the toys under the tree on Christmas morning. I’ve been doing my best to teach him the true meaning of Christmas. This year, he may go through some hard learning about the true spirit of giving rather than receiving.

I’m still confident that maybe our bonuses won’t be cut at work, even if we’re told otherwise. I’m sure Dad will have a job opportunity soon too. I haven’t given up all hope. But I do believe that, destined to be, God has a plan for us. After all, the meaning of the season has nothing to do with shopping and toys and all that business stuff. Having said that, God does understand that we want the best for our children.

If things don’t work out, I will continue to believe that the best thing is to teach my son that happiness is not about material things. If he can learn these now, wouldn’t it be a good thing to carry in his pocket all his life?

I’ve let him know that the XBox 360 he’s eyeing may not be coming this year to get him ready. During our conversation, I let him know why he would need another one since he already has so many other gaming systems. Wouldn’t it be better if we saved up to buy a big house where his stepbrother could live with us? Four of us crammed into an 850 square foot apartment. While I’m grateful for affordable low mortgages, isn’t it better for all of us to have more space? At first he resisted and said, “No, I want an Xbox”. For a few weeks, I let it settle and resonate. Just a few days ago, he came to me and said, “Mom, the house is better than the Xbox, and you’re right.”

Now that he’s such a great kid and has realized that material things don’t matter, I’d love to be able to provide him with some toys to reward the amazing insight he already has at 10 years old. In the meantime, I come up with ways to celebrate minus the gift and let the spirit guide us.

We live in Florida, so there are lots of free, fantastic light displays to make up for the fact that we don’t get snow! ! I think we’ll spend an evening looking at them and having a cup of hot cocoa. Maybe another night we can make Christmas cookies and sing carols. We’ll read the story of Jesus’ birth in the Bible and remember him as the reason for this season. Who knows, maybe, just maybe a child’s Christmas dream will come true. Maybe I’ll sell stuff on my site once and all this writing will be more than just a hobby.

We will find the meaning of Christmas and have the spirit with or without material “stuff”. May your Christmas be filled with the same spirit! Merry Christmas with peace, love and joy!
