World Wide Populations of Vegetarians

What do Brad Pitt, Bob Dylan, Pamela Anderson, Martina Navratilova, David Duchovny, and Brigitte Bardot have in common? All vegan. It is estimated that around 1% of the world’s population, excluding India, does not eat meat, poultry and fish, and around 0.1% are vegetarians, avoiding all animal products. However, these figures translate to about 60 million people globally, excluding India.

A large 2008 study of vegetarians [Vegetarianism in America, published by Vegetarian Times] shows that 3.2% of US adults (7.3 million people) follow a mostly vegetarian diet. About 0.5% of them (1 million) are vegetarians, who do not eat any animal products. Additionally, 10 percent of U.S. adults (22.8 million people) say they follow a semivegetarian diet, which includes occasional fish consumption.

The study revealed that 5.2% or 11.9 million non-vegetarians surveyed were “definitely interested” in becoming a vegetarian in the future. This shows that many people consider a vegetarian diet to be a healthy diet.

The Vegetarian Study collected data on age, gender, and other demographic factors, showing that:

– 57.1% of people have been vegetarian for more than 10 years; 18% for 5 to 10 years; 10.8% for 2 to 5 years, and 14.1% for less than 2 years.

– 42.0% were between the ages of 18 and 34; 40.7% were between the ages of 35 and 54; and 17.4% were over the age of 55.

– 59% were female and 41% were male.

A 2008 vegetarian study also showed that 53 percent of vegetarians ate vegetarian food to improve their overall health. 47% cited environmental factors, 39% cited “natural approaches to health,” 54% cited animal welfare; 31% cited food safety, 25% cited weight loss, 24% % mentioned maintaining their weight.

According to a 2006 Mintel survey (Mintel.com), vegetarians make up between 2% and 4% of the population in Western Europe, with the exception of the UK. The UK is proven to have the highest per capita vegetarian population in Western Europe, accounting for 6% of the population. The large number of vegetarians in the UK is due in part to a health scare related to mad cow disease.

According to Mintel, the number of vegetarians in Eastern Europe is between 0.3% and 1.9% of the population, which is much lower compared to Western European countries. For the rest of the world, data are incomplete and estimates range from 0.2% to 4% of the population, excluding India and Israel.

According to the Israeli Ministry of Health, Israel has the second-highest proportion of vegetarians in the world at 8.5%, which equates to 595,000 people in such a small country. There are more vegetarians in India than in the rest of the world combined. A 2006 survey by The Hindu newspaper found that 40 percent of the population, or 399 million people, were vegetarians.

It is estimated that more than 400 million Indians are vegetarians today, mainly because of class and religious considerations, the Brahmin class is expected to avoid meat, Hinduism advocates vegetarianism, and Jainism requires vegetarianism.

Jainism does not believe in harming other forms of life. They have over 7 million members and prohibit meat, eggs or honey of any kind; root vegetables (which may harm insects in the soil when harvested); fruit or vegetables left on the ground, and fruit or vegetables older than 3 days ( including pickles and preserves). The water must be boiled before drinking, and all liquids must be filtered before eating, usually with a cloth over the mouth.

There are different types of vegetarians based on dietary restrictions. For example, some vegetarians exclude all cooked foods, others may exclude milk or eggs, and so on.

Interestingly, when comparing vegetarians to non-vegetarians of the same population (same socioeconomic and cultural background), studies have shown that vegetarians have poorer health outcomes. In fact, peer-reviewed research shows that vegetarians have higher rates of cancer, dementia, obesity, heart disease, stroke, eating disorders, infertility, and other ailments.
